Rat Town Jiu Jitsu is proud to welcome back legendary Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor Kurt Osiander for a special members-only Gi seminar on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at noon. Known throughout the Jiu Jitsu community as “The Rhino,” Kurt brings decades of experience, direct instruction, battle-tested technique, and an unmistakable personality back to the mats in Atlantic Beach, Florida.

This will be Kurt’s third consecutive year visiting Rat Town Jiu Jitsu. After sharing his knowledge with the academy in 2024 and returning for another memorable Gi seminar in 2025, Kurt is coming back to continue a relationship that has grown far beyond a typical guest-instructor appearance.

Kurt is a friend and mentor to Rat Town Jiu Jitsu. His influence can be felt in the academy’s appreciation for hard training, effective technique, individuality, and authentic Jiu Jitsu culture. His annual visits have become an important tradition for the Rat Town community, giving members another opportunity to learn directly from one of the most experienced and recognizable instructors in American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Who Is Kurt Osiander?

Kurt Osiander is a Ralph Gracie black belt, seven-time Pan Jiu Jitsu champion, professional MMA veteran, longtime instructor, and one of the most recognizable personalities in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He began training in the early 1990s and earned his black belt under Ralph Gracie in 2003 after years of intense training and competition.

His competitive accomplishments include multiple Pan Jiu Jitsu championships across weight and absolute divisions. His success reflects the same pressure-focused, technically sound approach that earned him the nickname “The Rhino.” Kurt has never been known for flashy technique simply for the sake of looking impressive. His Jiu Jitsu is direct, physical, efficient, and built to work against real resistance.

Kurt also became widely known through his influential “Move of the Week” instructional videos. The series introduced grapplers around the world to his detailed teaching, sharp humor, and brutally honest way of explaining why a position went wrong. His well-known phrases, including “Shut Up & Train” and “You F’d Up a Long Time Ago,” became part of modern Jiu Jitsu culture because they captured an important truth about the sport: improvement requires consistency, accountability, and time on the mat.

A Friend and Mentor to Rat Town Jiu Jitsu

Seminars can sometimes feel like isolated events. An instructor visits, teaches a sequence of techniques, takes a group photo, and moves on to the next academy. Kurt’s relationship with Rat Town has developed differently.

Through his visits in 2024 and 2025, Kurt has become a trusted friend and mentor to the academy. Each seminar has allowed Rat Town members to build on what they learned during the previous visit while gaining a deeper understanding of Kurt’s approach to positioning, pressure, guard passing, control, and problem-solving.

That continuing relationship matters. Jiu Jitsu is best learned through repetition and connection. Having an instructor return over multiple years gives students a chance to revisit important concepts, ask better questions, and see how their own understanding has evolved. It also allows the visiting instructor to become familiar with the academy, its coaches, and the way its members train.

Kurt’s personality and teaching philosophy fit naturally with Rat Town. Both value hard work without unnecessary pretense. Both respect the history and traditions of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while leaving room for personality, creativity, and humor. Most importantly, both understand that real progress is earned by showing up and training consistently.

What Members Can Expect from the Gi Seminar

Kurt’s seminars focus on practical Jiu Jitsu that students can bring into training immediately. Members can expect detailed instruction centered on positional awareness, pressure, control, efficient movement, and the small adjustments that make a technique succeed against a resisting opponent.

Rather than presenting an overwhelming collection of disconnected moves, Kurt is known for explaining why a technique works and how it fits into a larger positional strategy. That approach helps students understand the decision-making behind Jiu Jitsu instead of simply memorizing a sequence.

While the exact curriculum will be revealed on the mats, attendees should be prepared for:

  • High-percentage Gi techniques
  • Pressure-based positional control
  • Practical guard-passing concepts
  • Details developed through decades of training and competition
  • Direct instruction and memorable explanations
  • Opportunities to ask questions and troubleshoot positions
  • A room full of Rat Town members ready to train

Students should bring a clean Gi, arrive early, and be ready to participate. As with every seminar, the greatest value comes from paying close attention to the details, taking the techniques into live training, and continuing to work on them after the event is over.

Continuing a Tradition of High-Level Jiu Jitsu in Atlantic Beach

Rat Town Jiu Jitsu is committed to creating meaningful training opportunities for its members. The academy regularly welcomes respected competitors, coaches, and influential figures who bring different perspectives to the mats. These events allow members to expand their knowledge while strengthening the culture and connection that make the academy unique.

Kurt’s return is especially meaningful because of his ongoing relationship with Rat Town. This is not simply another name added to the academy’s growing list of Jiu Jitsu seminars and special events. It is the continuation of a friendship and mentorship that has helped shape the academy’s training culture.

Located in Atlantic Beach and rooted in the Jacksonville Beaches community, Rat Town blends technical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction with the independent energy of local surf, skate, art, and punk rock culture. The academy welcomes students who want to improve, work hard, and become part of a genuine community both on and off the mats.
